City & County Credit Union helped make the long cold Minnesota winter a little more bearable for locals in need by hosting a Mitten Tree in all five branch locations.

For three weeks, members and staffers donated winter items for a total of 237 winter wear items including 164 hats, 39 pairs of mittens and 17 pairs of socks.

The items were donated to the Maplewood Salvation Army, which provides a wide range of services to the community such as a food shelf, an after-school program; an adult day center and basic needs programs including clothing vouchers, rent assistance and utility assistance.

"For our first mitten tree, we were overwhelmed with the response from our members. We had members bring in winter wear items that they personally handmade," Megan Primeau, vice president marketing said.

She shared the story of Wayne, a long time member of City & County Credit Union, who donated over 40 handmade hats to the Mitten Tree.
