The $34 million, Phoenix-based, 6,900-member MariSol Federal Credit Union accepted an official designation as a Juntos Avanzamos credit union last week.
Credit union industry executives who attended the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions conference Sept. 22-25 at the Downtown Sheraton in Phoenix mingled with the credit union's executives and members, as well as the Cornerstone Credit Union League and Mexican consular officials, during a brief outdoor ceremony that recognized the credit union's accomplishment.
Juntos Avanzamos (which means "together we advance" in Spanish), a program that originated within the Cornerstone league and World Council of Credit Unions, recognizes credit unions for their ability to effectively serve their Hispanic members and communities. To be considered for the designation, MariSol FCU was required to provide information about the products and services it offers to specifically address the needs of the Hispanic market, as well as its strategies for serving the demographic.

A representative from Mexico's consulate in Phoenix delivered a few remarks at the ceremony along with a translator, as did representatives from the Cornerstone league. MariSol FCU President/CEO Robin Romano told attendees that the award recognized a long-term reality at the credit union which had grown, in part, from mergers with other credit unions that served predominantly Hispanic memberships.
