The Fourth Corner Credit Union of Colorado's fight to serve legal marijuana businesses got many readers talking.

Here's what a few had to say in response to our Aug. 4 article: Pot Credit Union Sues NCUA.

We need to fix this. Coors Credit Union, Anheuser Busch Credit Union and Olympia Brewery Credit Union (now O'Bee) all formed to serve an industry that was once illegal. The employees of these legal cannabis entities lives are in danger because they cannot get access to basic financial services. That's ridiculous.

I think there's a stereotype out there that Cheech and Chong are running the show. I met the CEO of The Fourth Corner Credit Union and she is a lovely, smart, tenacious credit union professional. We are lucky to have her as she is paving the way for more states to offer financial services to this growing industry.

Not only does this industry create much needed jobs for millennials, in the first 10 months of legal sales in Colorado, $40 million in tax revenue was realized. In addition, violent crime rates decreased and statewide traffic fatalities declined. Upwards of $8 million has been allocated to fund youth education and drop prevention efforts. And the state is enjoying economic growth and the lowest unemployment rate in years.

When we look back at Prohibition we shake our heads. How could vodka ever have been illegal? And yet no doctor has ever prescribed a martini to a sick patient. Just sayin'…

I love vodka and I don't like pot (it makes me eat Doritos in an unhealthy way), but that's not the point. It's legal to buy both of these in my home state of Oregon now. And as the number of credit unions in the Pacific Northwest continues to shrink, I think we need to partner with this industry, help write the laws and give these employees access to all the love and collaboration that is the credit union movement.

If pot is legal in some states, there should be no impediments to a credit union based on that fact. As to [CUNA Chief Advocacy Officer] Ryan [Donovan]'s quote, it has already been judged to be safe, that is why the voters were able to vote on it. Having passed it in Colorado, no credit union should be prevented from marketing to that industry. If they can't start a credit union for that, they should start a bank.

While I would not normally comment on stories I write, I feel that as the reporter I need to clarify the statement as it would be my fault if his quote were taken out of context. When Mr. Donovan said "done safely," he meant the safety of employees and customers handling that much cash – he had no opinion whatsoever on whether marijuana was safe, or whether it should be legalized during the course of our interview.

I thank our inept Congress for getting us into this ridiculous mess!

Maybe, but CUs should wait until federal law makes it legal.
