The National Treasury Employees Union elected its next president Tuesday at its 55th national convention.
Tony Reardon, a 25-year NTEU veteran, received 89% of the votes in the election. He most recently served as NTEU's national executive vice president and will replace Colleen M. Kelley, according to a news release. Kelley has been NTEU's president since 1999 and is retiring.
“I am honored and humbled by the confidence placed in me by NTEU delegates,” Reardon said in a prepared statement. “I am committed to building on Colleen's legacy and strengthening NTEU's role as the voice of the federal workforce on Capitol Hill, at the agencies, in the media and in the courts.”
Reardon was first hired at NTEU to serve as the union's operations manager. As the chief operating executive, he was responsible for NTEU's day-to-day operations including finance, technology and member services. In 2013, he became NTEU's national executive vice president, the union's second-highest elected position, according to the release.
Replacing him as national executive vice president will be Jim Bailey, who began his career as an assistant counsel in Chicago and California and later opened NTEU's Denver field office, where he served as national counsel for 18 years.
The new officers will be sworn in on Aug. 13, the closing day of NTEU's convention.
NTEU represents 150,000 employees in 31 agencies and departments.
