While more than 1,000 state lawmakers swarmed Seattle Monday for what is considered the nation's largest gathering of legislators and their staff, credit union advocates also converged on the city to make their voices heard.
It wasn't hard for state legislators and legislative staff to see that advocates are driving home the credit union message – from banners at the airport, to volunteers in green "America's Credit Union" T-shirts, to exhibits at the conference, the credit union message was basically everywhere.
Ryan Donovan, CUNA's chief advocacy officer, said CUNA and several state leagues have been out in full force to ensure state lawmakers and more than 1,000 members of their staff who are also in attendance learn more about credit unions and how they affect their states. Although no policies will be made at the National Conference of State Legislatures Summit, several banking regulation policies are up for renewal soon.

"Dual chartering is [being considered]," Donovan said.
While Donovan said he doesn't think any controversy or intrigue will arise in regard to dual chartering, he wants to make sure there are no snags during the process.
The messaging also helps remove barriers at the state level, he said, as the leagues bring awareness to their policy makers on how "credit unions save consumers money," he said.
"We're there furthering the message," he said. "There aren't any decisions that are going to be made here but relations can develop and they can advance, and this is an important part of the advocacy process."
