After five years of service as president/CEO of the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas, Robbie Thompson said he will be stepping down July 23 from his position to start a new job in his native state of Minnesota.

Thompson said he accepted a position as the executive director of the Professional Liability Underwriters Society in Minneapolis.

Jeff Olson, executive vice president of government affairs for the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas, will serve as interim president/CEO beginning July 24 until the league's board of directors finds Thompson's replacement.

“It has been an honor to represent the wonderful credit unions in the Dakotas,” Thompson said. “While I am excited about my future with PLUS in Minnesota, I do make this decision with a bit of sadness as I will be leaving many credit union friends in the Dakotas that I have made over the last five years.”

Under Thompson's leadership, the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas became a more relevant, efficient and effective organization, Travis J. Kasten, president/CEO of the $139 million Service First Federal Credit Union in Sioux Falls, S.D., who chairs the association's board of directors, said.

“Despite this departure, CUAD is well positioned for the future,” Kasten said. “It is financially strong, has a committed board and a knowledgeable staff, and will continue to be a strong advocate for credit unions.”

Thompson also said he has full faith in Jeff Olson and the staff to continue to move the association forward in a positive direction.

“Our staff is amazing and the association's future is bright, but this is a tremendous opportunity for me with PLUS and a chance for my family to return home,” Thompson said.

Before he joined the Dakotas association in July 2010, he served as vice president and general counsel for the $429 million Members Cooperative Credit Union in Cloquet, Minn. Prior to that, he also served as general counsel of the Minnesota Credit Union Network.

Headquartered in Bismarck, the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas serves 70 credit unions with combined assets of more than $5.9 billion and more than 445,000 members.
