NCR and Wells Fargo announced today they have launched a new line of weather-resistant, full-service ATMs, meaning cash-only ATMs won't be the only kinds built for the outdoors.

The market's existing weatherized ATMs can only dispense cash, NCR said, but the NCR SelfServ 37, which has already been rolled out to more than 50 Wells Fargo units in California, can apparently withstand humidity, rain and temperatures ranging from -31 degrees Farenheit to 113 degrees Farenheit.

Because it doesn't need an external structure to protect it, the SelfServ 37 can also take deposits, cash checks and offer bill pay from free-standing outdoor locations. The new ATM is also compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the announcement, and takes up 49% less space than the typical full-function ATM that needs a dedicated external structure does.

The ATMs will be available to all financial institutions, according to an NCR spokesperson.

“The industry's first full-function weatherized ATM, the SelfServ 37, will help [Wells Fargo] offer more ATM services in more convenient locations for their customers,” Adam Crighton, vice president and general manager of Financial Services Hardware, NCR Corporation, said. “This is the type of innovation that financial institutions can expect from NCR as we continue investing in the ATM channel as part of our strategy to bring omnichannel banking to life.”

Omnichannel banking is at the forefront of the technological revolution going on in credit unions. The objective is to give credit unions the ability to provide service across various channels in a way that is consistent and unified for members.

In April, NCR launched its Kalpana enterprise platform that runs ATMs remotely through a thin-client Android platform. In conjunction with the launch, NCR, which is based in Duluth, Ga., unveiled the NCR Cx110, which has a curved interface on a thin bezel. A 10-inch touchscreen replaces the traditional pinpad.
