The NCUA has warned consumers about a scam that involves text messages from an NCUA telephone line requesting personal information.
The latest warning comes after the agency sounded the alarm on a fraudulent website.
The NCUA said it is not sending any text messages to consumers and is not asking for any personal or financial information from consumers. The agency explained that the attempted fraud scam is called spoofing. Consumers are advised to not click on links in the message or provide information to any websites referenced in the message.
“The perpetrators are able to mimic a telephone number to generate text messages,” an NCUA press release said. “The texts may warn of a debit card reaching its limit or use some other trick to persuade individuals to provide personal information or go to a malicious website.”
The NCUA announced that more than 40 consumers around the country received text messages on Tuesday. Consumers who receive the text message are encouraged to contact the NCUA's consumer assistance center at 800-755-1030.
