WASHINGTON – Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) said the NCUA should ensure transparency is a focus when developing its operating budget.
Aguilar said he supports public NCUA budget hearings. However, he declined to take a position on a proposed bill that would require a Government Accountability Office study of the NCUA operating budget.
"I think the NCUA can do a good job in making sure that transparency is a focus when they are passing budgets. I think it's important as governmental bodies that we are open and transparent," Aguilar said at CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference Tuesday.
Aguilar said he co-sponsored bills that would permit credit unions to raise supplemental capital and increase the member business lending cap because it's important to his constituents.
"They're important not only to the credit union industry, but in San Bernardino County, even though we have had positive job growth over the last few years, we've still struggling. I know access to capital is something that the businesses and community members are concerned about," he said.
"Anything that we can do to give more regulatory relief to allow credit unions to put money out on the street to offer loans to members and residents, that something that's good for San Bernardino County and that's something I'm going to be supportive of."
