Credit unions in Tennessee and Alabama have selected new names to reflect anticipated changes or growth in their fields of memberships.

The $46 million Johnson City Federal Credit Union in Johnson City, Tenn., announced in January that it changed its name to Select Seven Credit Union to reflect its recent expansion from serving members in only one county to seven counties in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

Last spring, the NCUA approved Select Seven's expansion into the Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia markets. The credit union said it plans to open a new branch in Kingsport, Tenn. in April.

Select Seven serves more than 7,800 members.

The $601 million Alabama Telco Credit Union in Birmingham, Ala., said it selected the name Avadian Credit Union to reflect the needs of its growing membership.

When it formed in 1934, Alabama Telco CU solely supported employees of the Bellsouth Corp. "Since then, we no longer support just one employee group. We provide financial services to more than 600 other groups and are open to the communities and counties we serve," Avadian explained in a prepared statement. "Our membership has grown to encompass members from every walk of life. We evolved as a company to meet that growth. Now it's time for our name to reflect that growth as well."

Avadian serves more than 68,000 members.
