Navy Federal Credit Union's 5.3 million now have instant access to new and replacement debit cards at any of the credit union's 259 branches worldwide.

The new program, rolled out just before the New Year, allows the $62 billion, Vienna, Va.-based institution to provide cards to members through its branches both in the U.S. and overseas in a matter of minutes, according to Navy Federal.

Thus far, 432,000 debit cards already have been issued under the new program.

"Immediate card issuance makes a huge difference to active duty members who serve overseas or face emergency deployment," Molly Steele, Navy Federal's debit card manager, said. "In addition, many recruits often need a debit card before entering boot camp, and families who move frequently can't risk a card being lost or delayed in the mail."

Following a successful domestic pilot program, Navy Federal began offering the free service to its military members overseas. More than three million of the credit union's members are debit cardholders and a large percentage of them use the card as their primary payment vehicle, according to the cooperative.

In addition to the new service, Navy Federal members will have 20 new participating branches in its network by the end of 2015.

"Our goal is to provide convenience," Steele said. "Members will have a ready-to-use, personalized card when they walk out the door, and even more new branches to visit for service. We know the challenges our members face, and we want to offer solutions."
