The $18 billion Pentagon Federal Credit Union plans to expand its operations in Omaha, Neb., this year.

The Alexandria, Va.-based cooperative said it plans to hire locally when possible to add positions at its service center as well as in information technology, finance, mortgage processing, member service and administrative support.

PenFed said it will also begin branch operations in the Omaha area. The credit union has had facilities in Omaha since 1992, according to James Schenck, PenFed president/CEO.

"We're excited about this growth period in which we currently find ourselves. It's not only good for PenFed, but it's good for our members, employees, and economies of the communities in which we have operations," Schenck said.

He added, "Regarding our plans to expand in Omaha, we've been a proud part of that community since 1992. From operating a major service center that employs about 400 people to participating in the fun of Pigskin in the Park, we're part of the landscape, but there is definitely room for us to grow. PenFed will need to recruit lots of local talent there."

Schenck said the credit union has been especially keen on speaking with members of the local community who have credit union or other financial services experience because he believes they will be ready to hit the ground running and grow with PenFed.

Schenck declined to give exact numbers of how many new positions will be added, but he expected they will match the credit union's history in the area.

"We have grown the Omaha Service Center from 273 employees in 2008 to 396 at the end of 2014 or a 45% increase. We are unable to provide specific numbers at this time, but due to the high quality work force in the Omaha area, we plan to continue our growth trend in line with this past growth trajectory."
