The $2 billion NEFCU is sponsoring a fashion show that will feature students who have designed clothing from recyclable materials and other items that would otherwise be on their way to a landfill.

Approximately 100 to 150 elementary, middle and high school students will showcase their designs at the third annual "Trashion Show" Jan. 15, according to the Westbury, N.Y.-based credit union.

NEFCU said it decided to sponsor the event because it resonated with the credit union's commitment to offer more environmentally friendly products and services.

"It's undoubtedly one of the most creative events you'll ever witness on Long Island, and we're proud to be able to nurture the creative spirit of these children, while also supporting the town's continued effort to promote sustainability," Edward Paternostro, NEFCU president/CEO, said.

Last year's Trashion Show included one-of-a-kind designs and colorful creations from dresses made from lampshades, tops comprised of playing cards, to entire outfits crafted from discarded products, according to NEFCU.

Students from nine school districts and two private schools showed their designs to an audience of 200 at a local community center.

The 2014 event also highlighted the town's success in recycling. According to officials, 713 tons of recyclables have been processed since the Trashion Show event began.
