thanksgiving dinner cook-off member one federal credit unionTasty turkey, savory stuffing and pumpkin pie truffles topped the menu at Member One Federal Credit Union's second annual Save This, Buy That Thanksgiving Dinner Cook-Off.

The Nov. 18 event in Roanoke, Va., raised more than $1,500 and collected 145 pounds of food for a nonprofit organization that feeds the hungry, according to the $655 million credit union in Roanoke, Va.

More than 200 attendees enjoyed the delicious dishes prepared by six local restaurants that competed to create a twist on the traditional Thanksgiving meal, Member One said.

"The cook-off's main objective was to not only create a budget-friendly meal, but to raise money for those in our community who aren't as fortunate during the holiday season," Tara Lilly, marketing supervisor for Member One, said. "The event was a perfect opportunity to team with local businesses and provide a variety of ways to create a Thanksgiving meal on a budget."

The cook-off which benefited Feeding America Southwest Virginia, was promoted in branches, local media and social media with the campaign slogan, "Great food. Great competition. Great cause."

The credit union even created a free ebook of recipes from the event.

Last year, about 150 people attended and helped to raise $500 and collect 400 pounds of food, Member One said.

All proceeds from the event, including ticket sales and non-perishable food items, benefited Feeding America SWVA, according to the credit union.

"One of our participants even took some of the food items that were available at Feeding America and showed a sample menu on how to create a meal from food bank ingredients," Lilly said.

"To be able to benefit a local organization, like Feeding America SWVA, showcase the culinary talent in our area and give attendees ideas on how to create a Thanksgiving meal on a budget is truly what the event is all about," she added.

The value of the donations exceeded expectations, Walker Nelms, marketing and communications coordinator at Feeding America SWVA, said.

"Not only did it raise awareness of hunger during the holidays, but also created donations of both food and funds," Nelms said.

In addition to donations of $1,524 and 145 pounds in non-perishable food items, sponsors donated time and resources to make the event a great success, he noted.

Hosting the annual event benefits the community and the credit union, according to Daniel Bliley, vice president of marketing and member strategy at Member One.

"It enhances our brand image tremendously, giving our members and the community a great event at a great ticket price of $10 for a chance to enjoy six different meals, plus recipes and tips on budget friendly-meal preparations," Bliley said.
