The $6.3 billion America First Credit Union has announced it is now live on Apple Pay.

The Riverdale, Utah-based cooperative is the second credit union to sign on. The $62 billion Navy Federal Credit Union in Vienna, Va., went live Nov. 3.

"We launched at 7:30 a.m. MST, Nov. 20," Nicole Cypers, public relations and social media manager at America First, said.

America First was able to be among the early signees, Cypers said, because the cooperative had forged close relationships with Atlanta-based card processor giant First Data and with Visa.

Cypers said since Apple Pay launched in October, America First had received many questions from members asking when they would be able load their credit and debit cards.

The credit union now has the answer those members had wanted to hear.

"Security and privacy is our utmost priority when it comes to offering our members the latest in technology and mobile advancements," Rich Syme, EVP at America First, said. "Apple Pay will bring a new level of efficiency for members, allowing them to pay with their mobile devices in a fast, easy and secure way."

Some institutions had reported technical issues in getting debit ready for Apple Pay. Cypers said America First is active with both its credit and debit channels and has not encountered any obstacles.

Cypers said the credit union has been posting the Apple Pay news to all the social media channels, from Twitter and Facebook to Pinterest and Instagram.

Some industry experts told CU Times to expect a small wave of new Apple Pay credit unions over the next three weeks. Most estimates still range near a few dozen as Apple continues to pursue a slow and steady expansion.

"Apple wants to make sure adding new institutions does not break anything," Michelle Thornton, manager of core products for CO-OP Financial Services, said.
