Just in time for the upcoming holidays, credit unions have been busy helping to ensure deserving families have homes.

Teaming up with Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County for its Women's Build project, Genisys Credit Union sponsored and volunteers worked hard to provide a home to a local couple looking to make a fresh start.

"They had a great time working together to provide a member of our community with a safe and livable home," Jackie Buchanan, president/CEO of the Auburn Hills, Mich-based credit union. "It's always rewarding to know that we've helped make a difference in someone's life."

Future homeowner, Cynthia, has faced Cerebral Palsy, a non-progressive movement disorder that causes physical disability, since birth. Due to medical bills and other unfortunate circumstances it has been challenging for Cynthia and her fianceé, Dennis, to afford a barrier free home.

"This Women Build project has been very exciting for Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County as we not only utilized women for 90% of the work done on the home, but also built the home to be ADA compliant to accommodate Cindy's needs," Kim Howard, manager of partnerships for Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County said. "For the first time in her life she will be able to enter and move about freely in her home on her scooter."

According to Howard, the Women's Build project was a first for Habitat of Humanity of Oakland County and support from sponsors such as the $1.6 billion credit union helped make it a reality.

This year, in addition to hundreds of volunteer hours, the Sioux Falls, S.D.-based $74 million credit union also created a retractable banner dubbed the 'Let's Find A Way' Hashtag wall as a fun way to boost engagement.
