Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), mayor of Redlands, Calif., is on track to win the House seat currently held by Rep. Gary Miller (R-Calif.), and defeat his opponent, Republican Paul Chabot.
Miller, vice chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, announced his retirement earlier this year from the seat representing the 31st district.
Aguilar, a former executive at the $856 million Arrowhead Credit Union in San Bernardino, Calif., had 1,600 votes more than Chabot as of Nov. 5, according to media reports.
Aguilar declared victory but the results have not officially been certified yet.
"Based on what we've seen so far, we are confident these results will hold up," Trey Hawkins, CUNA vice president of political affairs, said.
Aguilar's official campaign website said he won the race by two points.
"The people of San Bernardino County spoke clearly tonight by choosing a representative who is dedicated to building the middle class, and one who puts people over politics to get results for our community," Aguilar said in a statement on his website.
"We have come a long way, and I have many people to thank: my family, the staff and volunteers and all of those who have stood with us in this campaign because they believe as I do, that with a commitment to education, good paying jobs and our seniors and veterans, the Inland Empire can continue to be a place of opportunity and success," he added.
CULAC, CUNA's Political Action Committee, donated $10,000 directly to Aguilar's campaign and conducted an independent expenditure, which consisted of digital ads, Pandora online radio ads, direct mail and a website aimed at likely voters.
According to Hawkins, CULAC spent slightly more than $197,000 on the Inland Empire.
Katie Marisic, NAFCU vice president of political affairs, told CU Times the trade association contributed $2,000 to Aguilar's campaign through its PAC.
