Sheilah Montgomery, president/CEO of Credit Union of Atlanta, will retire Dec. 31.
After three years at the helm of the $69 million cooperative and nearly 40 years in the credit union industry, Montgomery said Tuesday she is looking forward to retirement.
"It has truly been a pleasure serving the loyal members and exceptional staff of Credit Union of Atlanta," she said. "I am pleased that the credit union is better positioned to face the challenges of the future."
Montgomery is a Credit Union Development Educator and received the distinction of the Certified Chief Executive by CUES.
She has been active in credit union political advocacy, meeting with several federal and state legislators on industry issues throughout the years, according to Credit Union of Atlanta.
Montgomery has also served on several boards in the credit union industry and currently sits on boards for the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions and the African-American Credit Union Coalition where she was the co-founder and the organization's first president.
She was named by the Atlanta Business League as one of the top 100 Most Influential African-American Women in Atlanta, according to the credit union.
Married with six children and eight grandchildren, Montgomery said she looks forward to traveling and spending more time with family.
Credit Union of Atlanta's board of directors is conducting a search for a new president/CEO, according to the cooperative.
Founded in 1928, the credit union serves more than 19,000 members. In July 2010, former CUA President/CEO DeFarra Gaymon, known as Dean, was fatally shot and killed by a New Jersey undercover sheriff detective in a Newark park.
