CUNA has spent more money on the upcoming midterm election than any other previous election cycle.

Vice President of Political Affairs Trey Hawkins estimated that CUNA would spend a total of $5.5 million to $6 million on the midterm elections.

Last week, the trade group announced its plan to send direct mail to credit union members encouraging them to support specific candidates, including $265,000 on for Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) in the Iowa Senate race and $117,000 for Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.)

Hawkins announced CUNA's involvement in more races Monday during a press call, including $400,000 for Sen. Mark Udall (D-Col.). CUNA is working with credit unions in Colorado to send mailers to more than 120,000 credit union members across the state urging them to vote Udall.

"It's the largest effort we've ever done in partisan communications so we're excited about that and certainly feel that he's deserving of that support from credit unions," said Hawkins, who mentioned Udall's dedication to member business lending legislation.

CUNA is also supporting Rep. Rick Nolan (D-Minn.) with $63,000, Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nev.) with $19,000, Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) with $24,000 and Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) with $50,000.

"All four are solid credit union champions in competitive races," Hawkins said. "This is all part of the largest effort that CUNA and the leagues have ever deployed on behalf of credit union candidates across the country," he added.

Hawkins said the partisan communications efforts are being funded directly by CUNA, not through CULAC, the group's political action committee.
