Disaster recovery and continuity planning will be the focus of a free NCUA webinar on Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Dominic Carullo, economic development specialist at the NCUA's Office of Small Credit Union Initiatives and Jerald Garner, national field supervisor with the Office National Examinations and Supervision, will join Jason Radde and Ben Cates, emergency management specialists at the Office of Continuity and Security Management, for a discussion on the most effective disaster management practices for credit unions.

The experts will touch upon ways for credit unions to communicate with members, regulators and vendors as well as the creation of back-up and recovery sites in different locations in the event of an emergency. They will also detail strategies to use when restoring the credit union's operations.

CEOs of two New York City credit unions will share their experiences in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. In addition, the NCUA said a CEO of a credit union in Baton Rouge, La. will be interviewed about the lessons learned following Hurricane Katrina.

"Recent natural disasters have illustrated the importance of effective contingency planning to ensure that all credit unions are able to fulfill their missions and obligations to their members during natural disasters or other disruptions in their operations," said an NCUA press release.
