Our men and women in uniform make great sacrifices for our country – and all of us – every day. The recent stories about patient care in Veterans Administration facilities and the Independence Day holiday remind us of another issue that affects many in our military today. All too often, service members struggle while on active duty or when getting back into civilian life, and they need tools to help them handle these events successfully.

Credit unions believe in providing exemplary service to their members. One way they fulfill this mission is by helping to ease these financial burdens on military families. Hiway Federal Credit Union has a field of membership that includes thousands of military personnel. In recognition of its efforts to provide service members and their families support, training, services and resources, Hiway was recognized as a "Yellow Ribbon Company" in 2013.

Being a Yellow Ribbon company gives Hiway the opportunity to share its passion for service with individuals and organizations that also want to give back to Minnesota's military community. Hiway serves Minnesota's military by understanding their situation, acknowledging their sacrifices and openly appreciating their service. By providing financial education to veterans around the state, including seminars on will and estate planning at Camp Ripley, Hiway helps military families during all phases of their service.

Col. Scott St. Sauver, a commanding officer, said, "As a currently serving veteran, time, money and trust are of critical importance to me. Hiway, as a Yellow Ribbon Company, exceeded my expectations with easy loan processing, competitive rates and friendly service."

Hiway also supports military career fairs, hosts veteran-owned small business symposiums, and shares every job opening with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development's military-focused hiring website. Every single job held by a veteran helps the entire military community stay strong and resilient. Hiway supports entire military families by bringing awareness of the challenges a veteran family face to all our staff, and the communities we serve.

Hiway is just one example of how Minnesota credit unions make members and communities and their number one priority. Credit unions focus on service – much like the members of our military do. And service members can trust credit unions to help build a stronger and more secure financial future for their families.
