Teen drivers in South Dakota are considered to be the worst in the nation.

That's according to personal finance site WalletHub.com, which looked at 16 metrics including  the average cost of car repairs and the number of teen drivers in each state to impaired-driving laws and teen driver fatalities, to rank the best and worst states for teen drivers.

Although young people ages 15 to 24 represent only 14% of the population, they accounted for about 30% of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries, WalletHub said.

That's not counting auto maintenance, high insurance premiums, possible traffic citations and other vehicular incidents that can rack up expensive costs over time, the firm noted.

According to WalletHub, the top 10 best states for teen drivers are:
