A record number of lawmakers including House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) are supporting the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run on April 6.
There are currently 210 members of Congress representing 47 states, American Samoa, D.C. and Guam serving as honorary race chairs for the event in Washington, breaking the previous record of 189.
“We are extremely pleased to see such a high level of support from the Hill,” said Charlie Mallon, president/CEO of the $782 million Congressional Federal Credit Union in Oakton, Va. and vice chair of the board of the race title sponsor, Credit Union Miracle Day. “This race showcases the credit union philosophy of people helping people since one of our major goals is to raise funds for children's hospitals.”
Congressional FCU and U.S. Senate Federal Credit Union both sponsor the annual Cherry Blossom Capitol Hill Competition as part of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run. In this race, teams comprised of staffers from House and Senate offices compete for the Capitol Hill Cup. The team with the best time displays the cup in its Capitol Hill office.
“Over 15,000 runners will be participating in what is known as the 'Runner's Rite of Spring' – from world-class athletes to first time runners,” Mallon said. “We are especially proud of our Capitol Hill Competition teams and runners. Nearly 900 congressional staffs are expected to participate in the race.”
Credit Union Miracle Day, which includes 101 participating credit unions and 48 business partners and CUSOs, contributed more than $6 million to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals across the country through Credit Unions for Kids program.
