For years, legislation raising the credit union member business lending cap has stalled in Congress. Last year, the bill almost made it to the Senate floor before it was pulled over a lack of votes.

The issue isn't dead on Capitol Hill yet: Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) introduced the Small Business Lending Enhancement Act of 2013 in May, and Rep. Ed Royce introduced a companion bill in the House in February 2013. However, to date Congress has not yet signaled an appetite for member business lending reform.

CU Times recently published a letter to the editor from NCUA Board Member Michael Fryzel (CU Times, March 5, 2014) in support of a NAFCU plan that encourages the NCUA to admend its MBL rules to provide relief for credit unions regardless of action in Congress.

NAFCU President/CEO Dan Berger replied with a letter of his own, further explaining the trade's plan.
