Talk about timing.
On Tuesday, member credit unions participated in CUNA's Don't Tax My CU Twitter campaign in support of the credit union tax exemption.
At the same time, House Ways & Means Committee leaders were putting the finishing touches on a tax reform bill that is expected to be introduced on Wednesday.
"Luck is when preparation meets opportunity," Richard Gose, CUNA senior vice president of political affairs said about the timing of the campaign.
Lawmakers received at least 8,400 tweets on Tuesday during the campaign, Trey Hawkins, CUNA vice president of political affairs said. The potential reach was 5.4 million impressions, he added.
The conversation wasn't just one-sided, Hawkins said. Yesterday, a group of Wisconsin credit unions that tweeted in support of the campaign received responses from Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), who stated her support of the credit union tax exemption.
"It's great to have her on record in support of credit unions, but it also shows our advocates that Twitter campaigns work," Hawkins said.
Gose said CUNA's advocacy Twitter account continues to pick up congressional follows; Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), who spoke on the GAC stage on Tuesday, is the account's newest high-profile follower.
Because the tax reform bill has not yet been released, Gose hesitated to call the campaign a win. And, he said, even when tax reform debate quiets on a federal level, credit unions must still battle with bankers who are pressing credit union taxation on a state and local level.
