The $27 billion State Employees' Credit Union said it waived more than $219,000 in non-sufficient funds fees during a late January winter blast that swept over the Tarheel State.

The North Carolina credit union's Another Chance program sends members an alert notification that a deposit or transfer is needed by 5:30 p.m. that day to prevent an item from being returned.

“During the wintry event, alerts came, along with snow and freezing temperatures that created hazardous road conditions. SECU kept members' best interests at heart by taking immediate action to ensure Another Chance items were not returned, eliminating the need for those members without online access to visit a branch in order to make a deposit,” SECU said in a release.

The 1.9 million-member SECU said it paid more than 5,900 Another Chance items over three days, totaling $916,000, waiving more than $71,000 in $12 NSF fees associated with those payments while sparing members an additional $148,000 in averted $25 returned check charges.

The big credit union may get another chance to show its largesse, as a massive snow and ice system moves across the Southeast on Wednesday and Thursday.
