iPad users did more and spent more on the mobile banking channel than smartphone owners in 2013, according to a study of 135,000 active end-users of Malauzai Software.

The Austin, Texas-based software developer said the 16 million logins those users at 130 credit unions and banks recorded in 2013 yielded an average of $691 per transaction, compared with $375 for smartphones.

The transactions included account transfers, mobile check deposit, Picture Pay (mobile photo bill pay) and bill pay.

“There is no clear explanation for this other than iPad users have more money, spend more to purchase their mobile device (iPad starting price is $375 vs. free for Smartphones) and trust the mobile channel for sending larger amounts,” Malauzai said in its Monkey Insights service report issued Jan. 14.

The report also found that mobile check deposits zoomed 25% higher in December over November, compared with the typical growth of 4% to 5% per month the company had been recording.

“Clearly Grandma and Grandpa were sending checks to their kids and grandkids for the holidays. In January, we have returned to the regular processing growth rates. This type of seasonality is really interesting, and provides motivation to get grandparents using P2P in the coming year,” Malauzai said in its report.
