When Unity Catholic Federal Credit Union heard that Pope Francis would be auctioning off a Harley Davidson motorcycle, the cooperative took notice.
The $71 million credit union in Parma, Ohio, was inspired to launch a promotion for motorcycle loans. In return, Unity Catholic FCU said it will then make a donation for each loan to feed the hungry in the Greater Cleveland area.
Last week, several news outlets reported that Pope Francis would seek bids on the 1,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide. Harley Davidson presented the motorcycle to the Pope in 2013 in celebration of the company's110th anniversary.
The bike is embellished with a signature on the tank that reads “Francesco.”
Proceeds from the auction will go toward the renovation of a hostel and soup kitchen in Rome operated by the Catholic charity Caritas Roma, according to the credit union.
“With each motorcycle loan we do, we're following our own mission of helping members save money with this low rate,” said Tamlyn Schervish, CEO of Unity Catholic FCU. “And we're giving back to those in need with $100 per loan for area food banks.”
Unity Catholic FCU's donations will be sent to the community in which each member lives to ensure all funds stay with local organizations, according to the credit union.
