Here we go … again.
The onslaught of Winter Storm Janus is expected to generate 8 to 12 inches of snow and frigid temperatures throughout most of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and New England states forcing credit unions to close up shop early Tuesday and possibly delay branch and office openings on Wednesday morning.
“Due to pending snowpocalypse, we will be closing all TFCU offices and branches at 3 p.m. today,” the $4.8 billion Teachers Federal Credit Union in Hauppauge, N.Y. posted on its Facebook site. “Please be careful driving home, and stay safe!”
Other credit unions throughout New York, as well as in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, have already announced branch closings or are planning to close early to allow employees to drive home safely before heavy snow makes road conditions dangerous.
State league offices also are closed or expect to close early today.
The Maryland District of Columbia Credit Union Association in Columbia, Md., closed its doors today.
“We are gearing up for some wicked winter weather, possibly a foot (of snow),” said Bridget Crawley Betts, MDDC Credit Union Association.
Diane Powell, director of communications for of the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association in Harrisburg, Pa., reported some credit unions in the area, including southern and eastern Pennsylvania, were beginning to announce early closings this afternoon. The PCUA office also is expected to close early today.
Meanwhile in Minneapolis, where the average temperature Tuesday was 4 – and with wind chill, 4 below, there have been no reported announcements of early branch or office closings, said Connie K. Kuhn, director of communications for the Minnesota Credit Union Network in St. Paul, Minn.
“They may not necessarily inform us of closure decision,” Kuhn said. “The Network office is open today and is slated to be open for business as usual tomorrow.”
Winter Storm Janus is the fourth extreme weather event since Jan. 3 that has forced credit unions to close operations.
On Jan. 6, numerous credit unions across the nation were forced to close branches because of brutal, life-threatening subzero temperatures generated by the Polar Vortex. On Jan. 7 and Jan. 8, credit unions in upstate New York shut down because of blizzard conditions. On Jan. 3, some credit unions had to close or delay opening branches after a winter storm, Hercules, dumped one to two feet or more of snow throughout some states in the Midwest and Northeast.
