The Credit Union Association of the Dakotas in Pierre, S.D., launched a state-wide billboard campaign in support of the credit union tax exemption. The campaign counters advocacy initiatives by the South Dakota Bankers Association, which has been requesting local governing bodies approve resolutions to support a federal tax on credit unions.

So far, SDBA's efforts have not been successful, according to CUAD.

The SDBA has a page on its website that promotes its Taxation Equality Awareness Campaign, which features presentation resources for bankers, the public, and the media. In addition, the page lists newspaper articles and recordings of local council and county meetings that show local officials discussing the issue.

On Dec. 30th, two billboards sponsored by the league went up on Highway 83 near the South Dakota capital city of Pierre, CUAD said in a prepared statement.

The billboards, which will be displayed until Feb. 23, are reminders that 251,000 South Dakotans depend on credit unions every day for their financial needs.

A third billboard will go up on Jan. 13 on Interstate 90 near the town of Wall, S.D., and a fourth billboard will be on display also on Interstate 90 east of Rapid City, S.D., on Jan. 20.

In addition, CUAD said it will be running advertisements containing the same credit union message on monitors located in the Pierre Regional Airport throughout the year.

According to CUAD, its staff has been countering the bankers' resolutions and presenting the credit union position at local meetings. So far, those resolutions have failed to win approval from city county commissions, as well as school boards across the state including the Brookings County and City Commissions, the Yankton City and School Boards, the Vermillion City and Clay County Commissions, and Campbell County Commission.
