Credit union industry leaders and volunteers will be honored during the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues' annual meeting and convention this week in San Francisco.
Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, president/CEO of the $2.1 billion, 174,457-member Travis Credit Union in Vacaville, Calif., will receive the Leo H. Shapiro Lifetime Achievement Award, the CCUL's highest honor recognizing excellence in credit union philosophy and a lifetime of contributions to the California credit union movement.
The award is named after Leo H. Shapiro, founder of the league and considered a father of the California credit union movement.
Van Ouwerkerk's 38-year credit union involvement includes serving on the boards of the California League and Western CUNA Management School, as well as being a founder of the World Council of Credit Unions' Global Women's Leadership Network and chairing fundraising activities for Children's Miracle Network, according to a prepared statement from the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues.
She also has served on the boards of CO-OP Financial Services, the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, and the Filene Research Institute. Her service on the CCUL board of directors has included a year as its chair.
Teresa Freeborn, president/CEO of the $800 million, 65,507-member Xceed Financial Federal Credit Union in El Segundo, Calif., will receive the Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes individuals for service to the credit union community outside the usual scope of employment at their credit union and beyond the scope of their chapter.
Roxanne Ostrem, board chair of the $652 million, 61,591-member Ventura County Credit Union in Ventura, Calif., will receive the Outstanding Volunteer Award, which honors significant contributions by an individual who serves credit unions in volunteer capacities, such as a director or committee member.
Annice Kim, president/CEO of the $14.2 million, 2,747-member L.A. Healthcare Federal Credit Union in Los Angeles will receive the Tomorrow's Star Award, which recognizes the achievements of young credit union professionals age 35 and under.
Randy Thompson will receive the individual category of the Kim Bannan Eternal Flame Award, which recognizes efforts that contribute to the success and future of Shapiro Group credit unions. The award is named after the CCUL's late vice president of credit union development and research and information.
Thompson developed the CostPro Suite, a tool that helps credit unions analytically and effectively price their loans, which has led several small credit unions to increase their operational efficiencies, such as the $38 million, 4,251-member Western Healthcare Federal Credit Union in Concord, Calif., according to the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues.
The Kim Bannan Eternal Flame Award recipient in the company category is the Plano, Texas-based Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union, which is being honored for its support, including the donation of $10,000 to the Shapiro group to sponsor educational opportunities for small credit unions. Additionally, Catalyst provides a multitude of no-cost of education and training opportunities for small credit unions.
