For its third small business cash mob, Mountain Credit Union was able to help support a local arts and crafts store.

On Oct. 18, the $157 million credit union in Waynesville, N.C., held a cash mob at Asheville, NC Home ~ Crafts.

“We really appreciate the extra word of mouth and social media advertising that the credit union was able to generate for us,” said Judy Quinn, one of the store's owners. “We hope that this event will spark new interest in the type of products that we offer.”

Asheville, NC Home ~ Crafts began as a source for local artisans to sell their work and also offers craft supplies, according to Mountain CU.

Quinn and Marie Hendrix opened the store with their own products and those of 25 other artisans and immediately sold out, the credit union said. Eleven years later, they have continued to expand and now sell for more than 100 artisans from Western North Carolina.

“Judy and Marie have supported the credit union for many years,” said Lisa Moore, branch manager at Mountain CU's Asheville branch. “Their store is a great example of what makes Asheville unique and their support of the artisans in our local community shows that they have a lot of the same 'community first' values that our credit union has.”

Mountain CU said it plans to keep choosing other businesses for its “Featured Business of the Month” on its Facebook page and through cash mobs to continue their efforts to support the small business communities in the areas that they serve.

Earlier this year, the credit union held a cash mob at a local ice cream and coffer shop.

Small business cash mobs continue to grow in popularity within the credit union industry. Several states, including Louisiana, Michigan and Ohio, recently held the events to help support local firms.
