Enjoying croissants, pastries and lattés, the Louisiana Credit Union League kicked off its version of a national small business cash mob Tuesday morning.

The patronage was a part of the industry's CU Lunch Local campaign, which has grown into an annual event spearheaded by credit unions that venture out into the community to support local businesses and in turn, build potential business lending and services relationships.

The Louisiana league said it will be lunching local all week. Staff enjoyed breakfast from Cafe' Latte Da in Harahan, La. Others had lunch had at New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co.

Throughout the day, the league has posted photos of staff on its Facebook page taking part in CU Lunch Local. As of late last week, 28 Louisiana credit unions had signed on to participate in the campaign.

In Michigan, where CU Lunch Local made its debut in 2012, more than 60 credit unions plan to take part in the campaign to support businesses, according to Jessica S. Richardson-Isenegger, who has helped to organize the effort with the Michigan Business Connection LLC, a commercial lending CUSO, and Michigan CU Capital, an entity that provides channels for credit unions to serve their members' small business lending needs.

Last year, more than 51 Michigan credit unions cash-mobbed local businesses by patronizing their products and services, Richardson-Isenegger said.

Michigan credit unions have also posted photos on Facebook of staff and others at local firms.

The Ohio Credit Union League said it will be coordinating with local food trucks to partner with credit unions throughout the state, said Kimberly Stewart, consumer outreach coordinator at the league.

Each food truck will be asked to donate 10% of its profits to Marching Miles for Miracle Kids, benefiting the nine children's hospitals serving Ohioans, and participating credit unions will match the funds raised, she said.
