The New Jersey Credit Union League and CULAC are supporting Newark mayor Cory Booker (D-N.J.) for U.S. Senate in New Jersey, CUNA said during a conference call on Monday.
"Cory Booker's been a strong credit union supporter at the state level," said Trey Hawkins, CUNA vice president of political affairs.
Booker is running against Republican Steve Lonegan, former Bogota mayor, in a special election Wednesday, Oct. 16, to replace the late Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg.
According to a CUNA spokesperson, CULAC contributed the legal maximum amount of $5,000 to Booker's campaign.
Booker led Lonegan 52% to 42% among likely voters with 12% undecided in a Monmouth University poll released on Monday. Booker held a 13-point lead over Lonegan two weeks ago and a 16-point lead in the summer.
"Concerns about Cory Booker's intentions to serve New Jersey continue to persist and his favorability ratings continue to drop. At the same time, voters clearly prefer Booker's political views over Lonegan's," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in a release. "The message seems to be that Garden State voters don't like to feel that their support is being taken for granted."
Hawkins said CUNA is also following the Massachusetts Democratic primary in the 5th Congressional District.
"We are with Peter Koutoujian, who is the Middlesex County Sheriff, the former state legislator who was very supportive of Massachusetts credit unions in the statehouse," Hawkins said.
That election takes place Tuesday, Oct. 15.
