Schools in four Texas school districts have shared $340,000 from the 57,000-member, $764 million Texas Trust Credit Union since the launch of the credit union's Spirit Debit Rewards card.
The program began in August 2011. The school districts shared $225,000 from the card program from August 2012 to August 2013.
The 14 participating schools, two administrative offices and one educational foundation receive 15 cents every time someone swipes the affinity debit card. Cedar Hill High School, the highest earning individual school, received $47,856.81 from the program for the year period.
Collectively, Spirit Debit cardholders have made more than two million purchases with the card, the credit union reported.
“Texas Trust has given us a tool to easily raise money to supplement our budget, which continues to be squeezed,” said Tammy Mariani, principal at Cedar Hill High School. “The Spirit card also allows alumni, or anyone in the community, to support the high school indirectly just by using the Spirit Reward card for everyday purchases.”
The Spirit Debit Reward card is part of Texas Trust's Spirit in Action campaign. Schools earn additional cash rewards when members open checking accounts or take out auto loans, personal loans or mortgages, the credit union said.
