An armed robber was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer who was in a Virginia Beach, Va., branch of Chartway Federal Credit Union conducting personal business Saturday morning, police said.

At 10:10 a.m. Saturday, a man wearing a mask, gloves and dark clothes walked in the Chartway FCU branch at 5004 Ferrell Parkway, brandishing what appeared to be gun, said Sgt. Adam Bernstein of the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The suspect announced his intention to rob the credit union, said Bernstein.

“There was an off-duty law enforcement officer in the bank as a customer conducting business,” Bernstein said. “He confronted the bank robber and (as) the bank robber turned towards him the officer shot him at least once. He struck the suspect and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”

There were six employees in the credit union branch as well as two other members besides the officer, a spokeswoman for the $1.9 billion Virginia Beach-based credit union said Monday. No one else was injured, police said.

Because the suspect was not carrying identification, police were working Monday to confirm his identity and notify his next of kin.

Police also declined to identify the off-duty police officer but confirmed he was from the Portsmouth, Va., Police Department.
