Unabated rainfall in northern Colorado has led to massive flash floods that have killed at least three people, damaged dozens of homes and cars, and closed hundreds of roads, schools and businesses, including approximately 20 credit union branches and offices in Boulder and surrounding areas including Longmont, Lyons, Jamestown and Nederland.

The floods forced at least four Boulder-based credit unions – Elevations CU, Premier Member FCU, Boulder Valley CU and Boulder Municipal Employees FCU – to close branches, phone centers and other back office operations Thursday.

Credit Unions Close, Re-Open in Boulder

Because officials at the Boulder Office of Emergency urged all residents to “stay home if at all possible,” credit union branches may be forced to remain closed on Friday. However, two credit unions are expected to re-open some branches Friday, according to social media site postings.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for Boulder County and northwest Jefferson County, and warnings continued for many surrounding areas.

What's more, the city of Longmont, 15 miles northeast of Boulder, has been “cut in half” by surging flood water from the St. Vrain River, the Boulder Office of Emergency Management said early Friday morning.

Hundreds of residents in several neighborhoods were asked to evacuate their homes and National Guard troops were called in to help with the evacuations. All roads in the town of Lyons have been underwater for two days trapping residents there since Wednesday.

The $1.3 billion Elevations Credit Union in Boulder closed its 10 branches in Boulder, Westminster, Lafayette, Longmont and Loveland. The credit union also closed its phone center.

“Elevation branches, phone contact center and back office are currently closed but we are looking at a possible limited opening tomorrow (Friday) at 10 a.m. best case and weather permitting,” according to a update posted on the credit union's Facebook page at about midnight Mountain Time. The cooperative said its online and mobile banking and ATMs are working.

Also based in Boulder, the $445 million Premier Member Federal Credit Union, closed its branches in Boulder, Firestone, Longmont, and Westminster Thursday at 1 p.m., according to its website.

Another Boulder-based credit union, the $300 million Boulder Valley, closed all of its five branches on Thursday, but said its branches in Arapahoe and Louisville would re-open Friday at 10 a.m. (MDT), according to a post on its Facebook site.

The credit union said its branch in Estes Park will remain closed, but has not determined whether it will open two other branches.

The $62 million Boulder Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union also closed its sole branch Thursday.
