The $5.1 billion Digital Federal Credit Union said this week that more than 100,000 of its 399,000 members now use remote deposit capture technology to deposit checks to the credit union.

Working with EasCorp's Vertifi software arm, the Marlborough, Mass., credit union was an early adopter of RDC technology, first offering it to desktop scanner users in March 2008. EasCorp began offering the service several months earlier.

Adoption has grown since then, along with the technology, and more than $1 billion has now been deposited through PCs, iPhones and iPads and Android phones and tablets, the credit union said.

RDC technology has proven to be an expected convenience, helping to reduce member attrition, the credit union said, and has brought new back-office efficiencies, such as online deposit transaction volume now surpassing mailroom deposit volume since 2010.

“Because we were one of the first financial institutions in the country that enabled members to deposit a check from their homes or business, we had to provide a lot of education on how to use the service. But, because the service was so easy to use, members quickly grasped and embraced using it,” said Julie Moran, DCU's vice president of support services.

“In addition, early on, we offered financial incentives to members just to get them to try it,” she added, noting that branch personnel now are equipped with iPads and demonstrate the service to new and existing members.

Vertifi, an EasCorp CUSO, said more than 110 credit unions in 32 states now use its DeposZip RDC solutions.
