CUNA announced Monday a volunteer will join its board meetings.
John Sackett, who has served on the board of the $1.3 billion Royal Credit Union of Eau Claire, Wis., for 25 years, is also chairman of CUNA's Volunteer Leadership Committee and will attend his first CUNA board meeting in September, the trade said in a release.
“Credit union volunteers play a critical role in the success of the credit union system and we must continue to find new ways to get them more engaged with CUNA,” said CUNA President/CEO Bill Cheney. “We are grateful to have the benefit of Mr. Sackett's views, and I look forward to his participation in our meetings.”
Sackett was appointed chairman of the Volunteer Leadership Committee in January 2011. The committee was formed to support volunteers and further increase their participation, and also serves as a strategic leadership resource, providing staff with advice and guidance for enhanced volunteer-centered initiatives.
“We all know the incredible contributions that volunteers have made to the success of the movement—and how critical they are for our future,” said CUNA Chairman Pat Wesenberg.
“With the many challenges before credit unions today—particularly in reducing the regulatory burden, addressing the issues of small credit unions and preserving our tax exemption—this added voice to our board deliberations is most welcome,' said Wesenberg, president/CEO of the $207 million Central City Credit Union in Marshfield, Wis.
Sackett has served as director of finance for the Eau Claire Area School District, and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a bachelor's degree in comprehensive public accounting.
He will attend the meetings to represent the volunteer viewpoint but is not a member of the CUNA Board itself.
