The $180 million MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union of Macon, Ga. recently recognized the recipients of its 2013 Tom Bentley Memorial Scholarship program.
Erin Wolf of Milledgeville, Ga. was awarded the 2013 High School Scholarship. A graduate of Putnam County High School, Ms. Wolf will attend The University of Georgia this fall and major in biochemistry and molecular biology. The high school scholarship is a $4,000 award that is paid to the recipient's college or technical college in installments of $1,000 per year.
Tesia Smith of Macon was awarded the 2013 Continuing Education Scholarship. Ms. Smith, a graduate of Howard High School, is currently earning her degree in Biology at Spelman College. The continuing education scholarship is a $2,000 award that is paid to the recipient's college or technical college in installments of $500 per year.

Applicants were judged on the basis of grades, SAT and ACT scores, service provided in school and in the community, recommendations by teachers or administrators, and financial need.
Judges for this year's scholarship program were Brenda Griffin, Assistant Director of the
Regional Coordinator Program for the Georgia Department of Labor; Dr. Ivan Allen, President of Central Georgia Technical College; Beth Byers, Director of Development at Middle Georgia State College; Gerry Marshall, radio personality and President of StarMar, Inc.; and, Cindy Cerka, Local Sales Team Leader for 13WMAZ.
The $3.5 billion Mountain America Credit Union of West Jordan, Utah, recently awarded three $2000 scholarships to local students who are also members.
The Paul R. Ball Scholarships were established in remembrance of the credit union's vice president of human resources, who was committed to promoting excellence in education for the nation's youth. Smith died tragically in 1992 in an automobile accident.
More than 100 students applied this year for the scholarships, which are awarded based on a student's academic performance, community volunteer service and a written essay about his or her educational and career aspirations.
This year's recipients are three honors students: Erin Cavender, who is at Westminster College, studying international business with an emphasis in marketing projects for humanitarian aid organizations; Erika Koltenuk, a student in the University of Utah's College of Nursing, who is participating in the accelerated nursing program; and LeaRose Lee, who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in elementary education at the University of Utah and hopes to teach first or second grade.
"It was very rewarding to have so many high-caliber students apply this year, and it is an honor to recognize our amazing scholarship finalists," said Sharon Cook, senior vice president of marketing and public relations. "We are confident that success will be theirs in the days ahead because they have already demonstrated how much they truly value education. Plus, they have a desire to use the knowledge and abilities they are developing in helping others and benefiting our community."
The $570 million First Citizens' Federal Credit Union of Fairhaven, Mass. announced the recipients of its 21st Annual Academic Scholarship Program. A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to 13 local high school students from its branch communities across the Southcoast and Cape Cod.
Each scholarship is awarded to deserving students every year who demonstrated a high level of academic excellence, leadership, and service to their community. In addition to the 10 general scholarships, one scholarship in honor of Barbara Whitehead Silva, former president and CEO of the credit union, is awarded. The remaining two scholarships are the Champion Family Scholarship. The Champion Account is designed to recognize teachers, EMT, police, firefighters and healthcare professionals for their outstanding service to our communities. The two scholarships are awarded exclusively to the immediate family of these members.
