There is little more than a week to go before the Feds Feed Families food drive comes to an end, but the NCUA said it has already collected more than 8,000 pounds of food.
To date, the more than four tons of food that's been collected by the NCUA for the annual food drive, has beat their 2012 donation of 2,079 pounds of food by a huge margin. The NCUA's contribution will go to the Capital Area Food Bank.
According to the USDA, since the campaign began in 2009, federal workers have donated and collected 15.2 million pounds of food and other non-perishable items to support families across America. More than 85% of federal workers live and work outside the Washington D.C., area, so communities in every state are being assisted.

"NCUA has a hard-working and generous staff that also has a healthy competitive streak," said NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz. "Food banks have had trouble keeping up with people's needs, and our staff has responded. With more than a week to go, we've already quadrupled last year's total, collecting more than 8,000 pounds of food. That's almost the weight of two Ford F-150 pickups. Several managers agreed to match staff donations by as much as four to one, and the result will go a long way towards helping families in the Washington metro area."
Doug Keeler, the federal program's 2013 director and an Agriculture Department employee, said he hopes to surpass the overall 2012 total of 7.2 million pounds of food they received last year
"Despite furloughs, despite pay freezes, despite everything else that is going on," Keller said, "federal employees are still filling up the plate."
Keeler added some federal employees themselves rely on food banks.
The food drive will run through Aug. 28.
