The $185 million, 16,400-member Lake State Credit Union in Moose Lake, Minn., plans to install three NCR APTRA Interactive Teller ATMs and additional (non-video teller) NCR SelfServ ATMs at its new branch in Duluth, set to open next month, said Tim Smith, Lake State's president.

The branch at 11 East Superior St. in Duluth will be Lake State's sixth full-service office.

Smith said the new facility, known as the Technology Village office, will be completely self- and assisted-service. By deploying interactive tellers, he said, the branch will bring commercial, mortgage and consumer services to the area.

“We have been interested in expanding our membership base into Duluth for several years, but the cost of building a full-function branch so far from our core membership base was prohibitive,” said Laly Larson, Lake State's senior vice president and CIO.

“NCR APTRA Interactive Teller gives us a cost efficient means for entering a new market. As our membership base in Duluth grows, we will examine more traditional branches. In the meantime, NCR's interactive video technology will let us deliver a personal member experience remotely,” Larson said.

Lake State CU partnered with Atlanta-based NCR and CASE of Anoka, Minn., which has been a NCR solutions partner since 1996.

According to NCR, APTRA Interactive Tellers can conduct approximately 95% of typical teller transactions, including activities that can't be done by a normal ATM, such as overriding normal cash dispensing transaction limits, scanning checks to give immediate value, and validating members by scanning their ID and recording their digital signature.

Although NCR declined to cite the exact number of video tellers it has deployed, NCR APTRA Interactive Tellers are now in more than 20 states and provinces in North America, according to Jeff Dudash, NCR's senior manager of public relations.
