After almost four decades as a staunch supporter of the credit union industry, a former board chairman of the North Carolina Credit Union League has stepped down as manager and CEO of the $37 million Blue Flame Credit Union in Charlotte.

Ben Hill, who had served as manager/CEO of the 3,800-member Blue Flame since 1990 and chairman of the league from 2006 to 2010, retired June 28.

Under Hill's leadership, Blue Flame experienced dramatic growth in many key areas, including assets, shares, loans and capital, said Jeff Hardin, the league's director of communications.

Hardin said Hill has also been a key advocate on the political front, having made many trips to Washington, D.C., and Raleigh over the years to support the industry. He is a past member of the board of directors for the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and was appointed by former N.C. Governor Jim Martin to serve on the N.C. Credit Union Commission from 1992 to 1995.

In addition, Hill shared his knowledge internationally by serving in a credit union Spanish Immersion Program in Queretaro, Mexico in 2007.

Hill, who received a MBA from Duke University and majored in business and finance at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, recently said in an article on the league's website that he has no firm plans, but hopes to stay connected to credit unions in some way.

“I'd still like to serve in some capacity, maybe teaching at the local community college or doing something with credit unions in the future,” he added.
