An employee with the $700 million, 100,000-member Vantage Credit Union, based in Bridgeton, Mo., and a Good Samaritan from Texas are being hailed as heroes for helping a Vantage CU member get back nearly $1,000 in cash that was lost during a vacation in New York.
Jenn Cloud, Vantage CU's social media specialist, was featured on a St. Louis television station last week for helping to return the lost money to its rightful owner – a Vantage member who had accidentally left an envelope filled with cash at a New York City restaurant.
“So many great things came together to make this story possible,” said Cloud. “It shows the connective power of social media, the local nature of credit unions and kind people out there in the world.
“We received a Facebook message last Tuesday night from someone who had found a VCU envelope containing a large amount of cash. Finding the member it belonged to seemed like an impossible task at first, but we decided to take the same approach as the young man who found the money by using social media to solve the mystery,” Cloud said.
Cloud re-posted the message on VCU's Facebook page and Twitter. With the help of VCU's members, the local media, and numerous posts, tweets, text messages, emails and phone calls, the credit union was able to track down the right member and the cash was returned.
