The $490 million Mazuma Credit Union is building itself a new headquarters that will feature dialogue towers instead of teller windows, a coffee bar and a fitness center, among other amenities.

The 60,000-square-foot facility also will feature a three-story atrium and will be located in Overland Park, Kan., across the state line from Mazuma's current headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.

Groundbreaking is set for July 11 and the new headquarters is scheduled to open in September 2014. The current headquarters will become a branch for members in south Kansas City, the credit union said.

“We're growing and our current headquarters no longer offers the space and infrastructure we need to expand,” said Brandon Michaels, president/CEO of 52,700-member Mazuma.

“More importantly, we're responding to the demand for services with the dramatic increase of members in Johnson County,” he said.

The new building also will feature a backlit glass exterior that lights up the skyline and walkout terraces for a scenic view. The dialogue towers will allow for more personalized and efficient service, Michaels said.

The headquarters also will house a 1,700-square-foot community center available to local residents and a series of uniquely themed 'innovation areas.'

“We'll use these areas like mini think tanks to brainstorm the best products and services for our members,” Michaels said.

Mazuma has set up a website with details about the project, including drawings, video interviews with designers and a blog.
