The Credit Union Kids at Heart Boston Marathon team is looking forward to next year's race as an opportunity to continue its fundraising work for Boston Children's Hospital.

None of the nine runners in this year's team were injured in the tragic bomb blasts, which occurred on April 15, two days after the Credit Union Kids at Heart presented a check for $128,000 at a pre-marathon party at a Boston restaurant.

The organization, established in 1996, is a group of credit unions that raise money for families and children at the Boston hospital and other facilities, and this year's contribution was earmarked for pediatric cardiac research, Credit Union Kids at Heart said this week in an announcement.

"As we find closure to the events that took place during the Boston Marathon, we look forward to all that we can do for Boston Children's Hospital in the future. We expect to surpass $4 million in contributions to the Hospital before the end of 2013," said Jane Melchionda, president/CEO of EasCorp in Burlington, Mass., and founder of Credit Unions Kids at Heart.

Each year the runners are paired with a partner child, a patient at Boston Children's Hospital.

"These incredible children, who overcome their own challenges every day, inspire the runners to train throughout the Boston Marathon season. The children are equally inspired by the runners who train hard in the months leading up to the race," the organization said. "Runners and patient partners often build lifelong relationships that extend beyond the Marathon season."

This year's nine runners in Boston were Austin Braithwait, Sue Sonia, and mother/daughter duo Kris and Kayla Biagiotti, representing the Credit Unions Kids at Heart group; Nicole Bedard, sponsored by Jeanne D'Arc CU in Lowell, Mass.; Tim Burch, sponsored by NASA FCU in Washington, D.C.; Kerri Comolli and Igor Ivno, sponsored by Digital FCU in Marlborough, Mass.; Jay Johnson, sponsored by Callahan & Associates in Washington, D.C.; and Ray Phillips, sponsored by Hanscom FCU at Hanscom Air Force Base near Bedford, Mass.
