CPCU Credit Union, Somerville, Mass., awarded four scholarships of $1,000 each to credit union members during its annual meeting. Scholarship recipients for the 2013-2014 school year were André Fernandes of Somerville, Paula Ferreira of Somerville, Leandra Furtado of Peabody and Gianna Scioletti of Melrose. Scholarship recipients are selected based on financial need, scholastic merit as well as their level of community and school involvement. Named after former board members for their dedication to attaining one's educational goals, the Carlos Faria and Victor Da Silva Memorial Scholarship Fund has been a part of CPCU Credit Union since the 1980s.
DuTrac Community Credit Union, Dubuque, Iowa, award seven members and 2013 graduates of regional high schools scholarships on behalf of the credit union's 2013-2014 academic scholarship program. Recipients of the $1,000 scholarships were Kendra Musmaker, a graduate of Hempstead High School in Dubuque, who plans to attend Luther College or Truman State to major in biology or psychology; Allison Kerper, a graduate of Eisenhower High School in Decatur, Ill., who will pursue a degree in biology/pre-med at Loyola University in Chicago; and Liam Rettenmeier, a graduate of Aurora Central Catholic High School in Aurora, Ill., who plans to attend Clarke University to major in athletic training. Recipients of the $500 scholarships were Caitlan Richard, a graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque, who plans to attend the University of Minnesota or Iowa State University to pursue a degree in civil engineering; Morgan Dolan, a graduate of Hempstead High School in Dubuque, who will pursue a major in education at Loras College; Marie Hafner, a graduate of Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, Iowa, who plans to major in pre-med and minor in psychology at the University of Iowa; and Ellen Funke, a graduate from Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque, who plans to attend Clarke University to major in elementary education.


Firstmark Credit Union, San Antonio, awarded $10,000 in college scholarships to area high school seniors. FMCU requested information on the students' high school activities, grades, and what their plans were for college once they graduate in May. Nearly 100 applications were received, and 10 winners were selected based on academic achievement, grade point average, character, leadership and personal recommendations. The following students each won a $1,000 scholarship: Zachary Deeds, Alamo Heights High School; Michael Agis, Harlandale High School; Arthur Garcia, Harlandale High School; Brianna Cook, Judson Early College Academy; Katharine Aoki, Lee High School; Cassidy Kempf, Johnson High School; Isaac Gonzalez, Fox Tech High School; Isai Mota, South San Antonio High School; Blake Tamez, Antonian College Prep; and Gabrielle Vickers, San Antonio Christian High School. The Frank Price and Helen Shipman Cunningham Scholarship was established by Firstmark Credit Union in 1993 to recognize the Cunninghams' dedicated service to the organization. In the 20 years since the scholarship's inception, Firstmark Credit Union has given $200,000 to college-bound seniors in the San Antonio area.

Frontier Community Credit Union, Leavenworth, Kan., awarded the McCoy-Porter Scholarship to Leavenworth High School senior Madison Herrig. For Herrig, the $1,000 scholarship will assist with tuition costs when she enrolls at the University of Kansas this fall. Herrig will pursue a course of study that supports her desire to work with children who have special needs.
The Iowa Credit Union Foundation, Des Moines, Iowa, announced the winners of its 2013 Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship program. A total of $5,750 in scholarships was given to four high school students and two post-high school students to further their education. The scholarship program received a record-breaking 485 applications. Each applicant was required to complete an entry form and write a 500 word essay on the following question: Given the fragile state of our national economy, with record unemployment and deficits, describe how having an emergency savings account is more crucial than ever. How might someone utilize their credit union to focus on saving? Winners were selected by a panel of judges including teachers and credit union professionals. The high school winners were first place ($1,500), Brandon Walls, DuTrac Community Credit Union, Dubuque; second place ($1,000), Tyler Hovey, Alliant Credit Union, Dubuque; third place ($750), Travis W. Prizler, Linn Area Credit Union, Cedar Rapids; fourth place ($500), Dakota R. Taylor, Premier Credit Union, Des Moines. Post-high school winners were Samantha Gaffney ($1,000), Veridian Credit Union, Waterloo, and Nolan Baker ($1,000), Cedar Falls Community Credit Union, Cedar Falls, The Warren A. Morrow Memorial Scholarship was named in celebration of Morrow's life and achievements in the Hispanic community and credit union industry.


Merck Sharp & Dohme Federal Credit Union, Chalfont, Pa., presented Hoffman Memorial Awards to five high school seniors at its annual meeting. For 42 years, the Hoffman Memorial Award recognizes high school seniors who are active in their community, and represent the people helping people philosophy of credit unions.
