The $3.5 billion Redstone FCU in Huntsville, Ala., said Thursday it is collecting monetary donations for disaster relief efforts in Oklahoma, following the destructive tornado of May 20.

“Establishing this account, and encouraging our members to give whatever they are able to, during this difficult time for the residents of Moore, Oklahoma, is just part of our social responsibility as a credit union,” said Redstone President/CEO Joe Newberry.

All proceeds will be donated directly to the American Red Cross of Central Oklahoma, the 360,000-member credit union said. Members and non-members can contribute by making a deposit at any Redstone branch. Redstone members may also make a donation by transferring any amount they choose to the donation account using online banking. Instructions on how to transfer funds to the account are available at redfcu.org.

“The heart-wrenching loss that the people of Oklahoma are experiencing right now resonates very deeply with members of our credit union, because many of them have seen tornado-devastated communities first hand, or may even experienced the loss themselves,” Newberry said.

“We have already seen a great response since opening this account Tuesday afternoon, and are confident that members will continue to give generously, to help the residents of Moore, Oklahoma persevere though this trying time.”

Huntsville has seen its fair share of major tornados, with F4-strength tornados damaging the city in 1989 and 1995. The area also experienced tornados during the largest recorded tornado outbreak in history April 25-28, 2011, which killed 324 people across six states. Redstone collectednearly $100,000 to aid victims of the 2011 outbreak
