So our latest LinkedIn poll has got some readers buzzing.
Credit Union Times recently posted a poll asking: Should CUNA have splashed loud warnings of a rumored May 7th DDoS attack on U.S. financial institutions on its website?
The completely unscientific poll found that the majority of respondents appreciated the heads up: 71% to 28%. Those who were affected by a DDoS attack in the past commented that they preferred being given the advance notice.
The most common objection raised was questioning why the warning was posted on the website alerting the “bad guys” that credit unions were preparing for an attack. Many agreed that broadcasting it in public “was not a good idea, at least without some more specifics via secure communications.”
Ken Schroeder, vice president business continuity at Corporate One Federal Credit Union, said the question itself was not as simple as a yes or a no and represented a cognitive dissonance.
He said:
“Yes they should have! Letting everyone become better prepared is a valid, admirable goal, and the broadcast would do that. Far too many have buried their heads in the sand with 'Those only affect the big banks', which works fine until the event actually materializes and it affects them.
“No they shouldn't! If the CU industry wasn't part of the target before, we've certainly put a bullseye on our backs.
“The difference is we aren't a single entity, but if the industry as a whole is considered, the core processors are counted on one hand, at least as far as the major players are concerned.”
