Allpoint Network, an ATM network that provides surcharge-free access to cardholders while charging participating financial institutions, announced Tuesday that the number of its surcharge-free ATMs has grown from 23,000 in 2003 to 55,000.
The network, which is affiliated with Cardtronics, the nation's largest independent ATM deployer, said it has many participating credit unions but declines to specify exactly how many.
The organization attributed the growth in its own offering to similar growth at Cardtronics, citing specifically its purchase of the ATM network Access to Money in 2011 and ATM Network in 2012.

The purchases added thousands of new merchant ATM sites, Allpoint said, particularly in the Upper Midwest and northern plains states.
"Surcharge-free ATM access, even in this burgeoning age of mobile wallets and payments, continues to rank at or near the top of consumer wish lists when selecting a financial institution or prepaid card provider," said Ben Psillas, president of the Allpoint Network.
